Spencer Glacier
Portage
The feel
Spencer Glacier is a remote wilderness area with no road access. You arrive by Alaska Railroad train at the Spencer Whistle Stop, and the glacier is a wall of ice cascading down the mountains to Spencer Lake.
From the station, a well-maintained 1.3-mile path leads to the glacier overlook on the edge of the lake. Guided floats use rubber boats among the icebergs on Spencer Lake before drifting down the Placer River. A Forest Service interpreter also tours the foot of the lake, and a guide steers an Alaskan Native canoe among icebergs calved off the glacier.

Mingo says
Plan your whole visit around the train times, because the 4:40 PM departure is your only ride back. Visit from late May through mid-September, when the Glacier Discovery Train runs daily.
