The feel

Byron Glacier Trail is an easy walk that gets you a close-up view of a glacier, with rugged mountains in all directions. The route is 1.4 miles one way with 100 feet of elevation gain, and public use is heavy.

Extremely large cornices overhang Byron Glacier Valley, and snow and avalanche danger can persist into the summer months. Nearby, Portage Lake has a milky blue color from rock flour suspended in the water. Portage Glacier is no longer visible from the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center, but the center looks out on Portage Lake and the surrounding mountains.

Crowds and best time

Public use is heavy. Recommended season is mid June to October.

Parking

Trailhead lot off Portage Lake Loop Road, about 1 mile from the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center via Byron Glacier Road.

Fees and passes

The Begich, Boggs Visitor Center charges $5 for adults, children 15 and younger are free, and Interagency Passes are honored.

Hazards

Extremely large cornices overhang the valley, and avalanche danger can persist into summer. The visitor center is roughly 2 miles from a potential Portage Lake landslide; be extra cautious during and after heavy rainfall, especially in summer and fall.

Season and access

At mile 79 of the Seward Highway, 49 miles south of Anchorage, turn onto Portage Glacier Road and travel 5 miles, then turn on Portage Lake Loop Road. The visitor center is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, Thursday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Avoid the glacier valley until the snow has avalanched. Portage Valley weather can differ sharply from Anchorage, so check conditions before you drive.

• Bring $5 per adult for the visitor center, which includes the film and exhibits.
• Book Portage Glacier Cruises at 1-800-544-2206; they run mid-May through mid-Sept.
• Be ready to evacuate immediately if a landslide warning is given in Portage Valley.
