The feel
This is the concrete boat launch at Salcha River State Recreation Site, the main public access to a river that sees more returning king salmon than any other Tanana tributary. It is also an excellent Interior grayling fishery.
The site has 6 campsites, toilets, water and a public-use cabin. From the launch you can run a drift boat or riverboat for the salmon water, or walk or drive to the large gravel bar downstream of the highway bridge and fish for grayling with spinning gear or a fly rod. It draws high crowds.

- Salcha River State Recreation Site at Mile 323.3 of the Richardson Highway, about 40 miles southeast of Fairbanks. Concrete boat launch; the large gravel bar downstream of the highway bridge gives bank access.
- Species and timing
- Arctic grayling May through September, typically 12 to 18 inches. King salmon late June to early August and chum mid-July to late August, when open. Coho, sheefish and northern pike are also in the river.

- Salmon fishing is open from the mouth to a marker 2.5 miles upstream of the Richardson Highway bridge. King and chum limits are set by emergency order, and the king fishery has been closed in some recent seasons, so do not rely on a stated bag limit.

Come for kings only if the fishery is open. Grayling run from May through September, so you have a fallback when kings are closed.
