Salcha River State Recreation Site Campground

The feel

This is a small campground of 6 sites on 61 acres beside the Salcha River, 40 miles southeast of Fairbanks at Mile 323.3 Richardson Highway. It works as a put in and take out point for float trips, and the boat launch and picnic sites are right at the river.

The river has an excellent grayling fishery and a good salmon run in July. With toilets and water on site and no hookups, it is a plain riverside camp for anglers and paddlers.

Check-in and stay

First come, first served. The camping limit is 15 days.

Parking and rig size

No RV size limit. There are no hookups.

Fees and reservations

$20 per vehicle. Campsites cannot be reserved.

Bathrooms and water

Vault toilets and drinking water are on site.

Season and access

Roughly mid May to mid September, weather dependent. In winter the frozen river is used for cross-country skiing and snowmachining.

Mingo says

Aim for July if you want to fish the salmon run. Grayling fishing is excellent on this stretch of the river.

Before you go

• Bring $20 for each vehicle, since sites are first come, first served with no reservations.
