What it is like
White Mountains NRA Summer Trails (Wickersham Dome / Wickersham Creek) is a vast BLM backcountry network of rough, largely unmarked doubletrack north of Fairbanks, near Fox. It is rated advanced, and it is expedition-style riding rather than an afternoon loop. Non-motorized use, including bikes, is allowed year-round, and the Wickersham Dome trailhead at Mile 28 Elliott Highway has parking and a restroom.
The trail network is about 20 miles from Fox, so plan a real trip rather than a stop in town. Wickersham Dome, 2.8 miles away, is a 3,159 foot summit and a popular day hike with wide views over the Interior's rolling hills. Lee's Cabin, 5.9 miles away, is a BLM log cabin reachable by trail in both seasons, sleeping up to 8. Summit Trail Shelter is a primitive BLM shelter on the foot-only Summit Trail, bookable via recreation.gov up to 30 days out.
A vast BLM backcountry trail network north of Fairbanks, built primarily for winter dog mushing, skiing and snowmachine travel but open to non-motorized summer use including mountain biking. Trails are rough, remote and largely unmarked doubletrack; this is expedition-style riding, not an afternoon loop. The Wickersham Dome trailhead at Mile 28 Elliott Highway is the main access point and has parking and a restroom.
