Jakolof Bay Road

The feel

This is a coastal gravel and dirt road from Seldovia along the south shore of Kachemak Bay to Jakolof Bay Dock. It winds for 10 miles through private and Seldovia Native and Village lands. It is also the access route for the Red Mountain chrome-mine trail.

Seldovia has no road connection to the rest of Southcentral Alaska, so getting there means a ferry, a water taxi or a flight from Homer. The area has some fine mountain biking on wilderness trails.

What to expect

Route and terrain

About 10 mi one way on gravel and dirt from Seldovia to Jakolof Bay Dock, rated Intermediate. From there an eight-mile, mostly uphill ride leads toward the foot of Red Mountain and back.

Time

The full outing, including the Red Mountain ride, takes about three hours.

Hazards

The road crosses private and Seldovia Native and Village lands. The Jakolof Bay dock was at the end of its usable life in 2024, with the city pursuing a federal grant to replace it.

Season and access

Summer. Seldovia is reached by ferry, water taxi or a flight from Homer. A water taxi can also drop riders at the Jakolof Bay dock.

Ride it in summer. If you want to skip the 10 miles from Seldovia, take a water taxi to the dock and start from there.

• Allow about three hours if you add the ride toward Red Mountain.
