Matanuska River Loop (Edge Nature Trail)

The feel

The Edge Nature Trail begins at the rest area and curves through boreal forest, with interpretive signs along the way, to platforms that look out over the glacier. It is a 20-minute walk.

The recreation site offers some of the safest and best public viewing in the area. There is no glacier access from here, so this is a place to look at the ice, not walk on it.

Loop, 1 mile, with 196 ft of gain, through forest on an interpretive path to glacier viewing platforms.

The lot at the rest area, at Mile 101 of the Glenn Highway, one mile south of Long Rifle Lodge.

Fees and passes

Parking is $7/day at the recreation site.

Dogs

Pets must be under control at all times and owners clean up pet waste.

Rated easy.

Bathrooms and water

Toilets and a water pump at the recreation site.

Season and access

The site is open until closed by winter snow and ice. It is 93 miles from Anchorage and 52 miles from Palmer.

Treat the platforms as the main event, because the trail stops at viewing only. The walk is about 20 minutes and rated easy.

• Bring $7 for the day's parking.
• Keep your dog under control and pick up after it.
