The feel

The trail starts through an embankment at the back of the Fishhook parking area. It climbs gently at first, then turns directly up the spine of a ridge, and that section takes real effort. Most people stop at a small porch of tundra halfway up, where the view runs south down the Little Susitna River to the Palmer-Wasilla flats.

Higher up, a rock outcrop marks the point where the climbing gets easier, and the trail winds along the ridge to a weather tripod at the summit. From there the Independence Mine valley spreads out below and the Talkeetna Mountains rise around it. Marmots and Arctic ground squirrels are common, blueberry pickers work the slopes, and paragliders may be overhead.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 2.8 to 2.9 miles total, with 1948 to 1,988 ft of gain. Gentle at first, then steep up the ridge spine, then easier along the ridge for the last 0.5 miles.

About 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Popular for blueberry picking.

Parking

The Fishhook Trailhead lot is at mile 16.5 of Hatcher Pass Road, on the right.

Fees and passes

$5 day use; a state park pass is accepted.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome on leash.

Hazards

The steep first mile and muddy sections can be slippery, and the trail is not recommended on a rainy day. Snowfields may remain in late summer.

June through October.

Choose a dry day, because the steep sections get very slippery in rain. Late summer can still hold snowfields on the route.

Before you go

• Bring gaiters if you go in late summer, when snowfields may remain.
• Wear boots with good grip for the slippery steep stretches.
• Pay the $5 parking fee or bring a state park pass.
