Hope Point

The feel

This is a ridge climb straight up from Hope, with Turnagain Arm views the whole way. The switchbacks wander into the crook of a valley, sidehill out to overlooks of Turnagain Arm, then follow a relatively narrow, rocky ridge to a saddle. One last push up rocky terrain reaches the summit.

From the top you look over Resurrection Creek Valley, Turnagain Arm, Cook Inlet, Fire Island and the Chugach Mountains. The summit can get quite windy, and some scrambling is required to reach the actual top.

What to expect

Route and terrain
Out and back, 3.5 miles one way, with 2,338 to 3600 ft of gain. Moderate grades with many switchbacks, then a narrow rocky ridge and some scrambling to the summit.
Time
2-4 hours one way.
Crowds and best time
Public use is moderate.
Fees and passes
No parking fee.
Dogs
Think carefully about bringing a dog, because there is no water and the incline is steep.
Hazards
Switchbacks are very slick when wet. Use caution with bear and moose, and be prepared for rapid weather changes. Winter travel is unsafe because of avalanche hazards. Horses and bicycles are not recommended on the tight switchbacks.
Bathrooms and water
No water after the first 1/3 mile, so carry plenty of drinking water.
Season and access
Recommended May-October. From Mile 56.5 on the Seward Highway, turn west onto Hope Highway and drive 17.8 miles.

Mingo says

Go from May through October. Check the forecast first, because the summit is windy and the trail is slick after rain.

Before you go

  • Carry all the water you need for the climb.
  • Turn left 500 ft before Porcupine Campground, then drive 1/4 mile to the trailhead.
  • Leave horses and bicycles at home; the grades and tight switchbacks are not suited to them.
