Eveline State Rec Site

The feel

Eveline is an 80-acre state recreation site off East End Road, with a walk through mixed forest and meadow and views of the mountains across Kachemak Bay. The terrain is mostly gentle, and boardwalks keep the trails dry except for a few wet spots. In summer the highlight is fields of wildflowers, especially from June through August.

The Alpine Meadows Loop around the perimeter looks out over rolling hills, Kachemak Bay, the Kenai Mountains and Doroshin and Portlock Glaciers. There is usually a flower guide at the trailhead that you can borrow and return, and several interpretive panels along the way. The viewing platform has a picnic table.

What to expect

Layout and setting

Loop, 2 miles around the outer perimeter, with many connectors forming an inner maze of trails. Easy walking, with 170 ft of elevation change.

Crowds and best time

Wildflowers peak from June through August.

Parking

Take East End Road past the McNeil Canyon School to mile 13.8, turn left onto Alpine Meadow Drive and go 0.3 miles to the trailhead. Parking is ample.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on leash.

Kids

Rated easy. A short loop to the viewing platform and picnic table is wheelchair accessible.

Hazards

The site is adjacent to private land. Soils are generally waterlogged in summer.

A toilet is on site.

Season and access

Hiking in summer. In winter the trails are cross country ski trails.

Come between June and August for the wildflowers. Summer use is hampered by waterlogged soils, so dry weather helps.

Before you go

• Borrow the flower guide at the trailhead and return it for the next hiker.
• Stay on the trails, because the site borders private land.
• In winter, snowshoers should stay off the groomed ski trails.
• Keep dogs on a leash.
