Angel Rocks to Chena Hot Springs Trail
The feel
The trail starts at the Angel Rocks Trailhead and climbs to an alpine ridge above timberline that is faint in places and marked with cairns. It rises from 927 ft at the trailhead to a high point of 2800 ft.
The Angel Rocks Trail Shelter sits in the third saddle. Blueberry patches line the ridge in August. Portions of the trail are on private property. It ends at Chena Hot Springs.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Point-to-point, 8.3 miles one way with 2083 ft of gain, from the Angel Rocks Trailhead at mile 48.9 to Chena Hot Springs at mile 56.5 of Chena Hot Springs Road. Parts are steep and rocky, and the alpine ridge is marked with cairns.
- Time
- 4.5 to 5 hours, though some hikers take 5 to 8 hours.
- Crowds and best time
- A very popular area, so expect other people. April through September is the best window.
- Dogs
- Allowed; keep children and pets close and watch for traps and bait near trails.
- Kids
- Rated moderate; monitor children closely.
- Hazards
- Steep, rocky sections can be treacherous. Above timberline, weather can hamper visibility and make cairns hard to find. Mosquitoes and gnats are abundant in summer.
- Bathrooms and water
- Water sources may be unreliable and unsafe, so carry at least one day's supply. The spring at mile 5.4 is not reliable.
- Season and access
- April through September. Mountain bikes and other vehicles are prohibited.
Mingo says
Go in August if you want the blueberries along the ridge. Check the sky before you commit to the alpine stretch.
