The feel

Arctic grayling offer excellent fishing here, and they rise to dry flies and nymphs such as mosquitos, elk hair caddis and mayflies.

The water is mostly Class I with some Class II and III sections. It is typically very shallow for the first 10 miles, so boats are lined through the shallows and sometimes dragged. Northern pike turn up in the lower reaches, in slow water, sloughs and connected lakes.

Water and access

River reached from the Steese Highway at MP 94, MP 140.4 and MP 147.1. The first two are gravel bars. A float runs about 110 miles from a pull-off at milepost 94.

Arctic grayling in May through September. Northern pike in the lower reaches.

Methods and gear

Dry flies and nymphs for grayling. For pike, silver or gold spoons or spinners, surface lures and rubber fish or frog patterns, on a steel leader.

License and rules

Check the sport fishing regulations before fishing.

Hazards

Shallow water, with boats lined or dragged through the first 10 miles. Large rafts are not recommended.

Season and access

May through September. Small jet boats can reach about 30 miles upstream of the Steese Highway bridge.

Plan your trip between May and September for grayling. Expect a slow start on the upper water. Boats must be dragged about 1/4 mile until the North Fork of Birch Creek.

Before you go

• Take out at the Lower Birch Creek Wayside at milepost 140.5, or go 16 more river miles to the Steese Highway Bridge.
• Bring a steel leader if you plan to fish for pike.
• Leave the large raft at home.
