Sanctuary River Campground
Denali Park
The feel
Sanctuary River is a tent-only campground with 7 sites, tied with Igloo Creek as the smallest in Denali and one of the most remote. It is heavily wooded, with screening between most sites, and the ground around it is brushy. The bus stop is less than 100 yards from the sites.
Red squirrels and snowshoe hares are the regulars here. Moose, caribou and grizzly bears are occasionally seen in the area, though not often in the campground itself. The nearby mountains allow hiking directly from camp, and on clear days Mount McKinley may be visible after strenuous uphill hiking.
What to expect
- Layout and setting
- Tent only, 7 sites in heavy woods with screening between most sites, at Mile 22 of the park road. It is the first tent-only campground when entering from the park entrance.
- Parking and rig size
- No personal vehicle access. The campground is reached only by camper bus, and the bus stop is less than 100 yards from the sites.
- Fees and reservations
- $25.75 per night. Reservable online through the park's booking system.
- Dogs
- Pets are not permitted on camper buses.
- Hazards
- Moose, caribou and grizzly bears are occasionally seen in the area. Store all food and scented items, including toothpaste, sunscreen and coolers, in the food locker near the entrance, and label and date what you leave in it.
- Bathrooms and water
- No drinking water at the campground, so bring a filter or purification tablets. The river flows clear most of the summer, so silt is not expected to clog a filter. Pit-vault toilets are near the campground entrance.
- Season and access
- Roughly May 20 through September 16. Camper bus only; no fires are permitted and you must cook on a camping stove. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 6 am.
Mingo says
Go when the campground is open, from late May into mid-September. Pick a clear day if you want Mount McKinley in view, since the view depends on the weather.
Before you go
- Reserve online through the park's booking system, and plan to arrive by camper bus.
- Pack a camping stove, because no fires are permitted.
- Carry a water filter or purification tablets, since there is no drinking water at the campground.
- Call the park at (907) 683-9532 with questions; a ranger answers 9 am to 4 pm daily, except on major holidays.
