Johnson Lake, Kasilof

The feel

Johnson Lake State Recreation Area is a wooded, 332 acre area around the lake, and camping, rainbow trout fishing, canoeing and walking are popular here.

Moose, black and brown bear and lynx are plentiful, so a clean camp matters. There are 48 campsites, 16 day use parking sites and a group picnic area, and groups over 12 people need reservations.

What to expect

Layout and setting

Picnic shelters, an accessible boat ramp and a camp host are on site.

Check-in and stay

15 day camping limit. Quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and fires are allowed only in the fire grates provided.

Parking and rig size

RVs are limited to 35 feet.

Fees and reservations

$15 to $20 a night. Some campsites are reservable online, and the rest are first come, first served. A daily parking fee applies to day use.

Dogs

Pets must be leashed and under control at all times in developed areas.

Hazards

Bears are plentiful, so keep a clean camp and do not feed wildlife. Swimming in cold water can be dangerous, and no lifeguard is on duty.

Accessible vault toilets and accessible drinking water are on site.

Season and access

Open May to September. From about Mile 110 on the Sterling Highway, turn onto Johnson Lake Road, then Tustumena Lake Road, and take the first right into the recreation area.

Bring a rod or a canoe, since rainbow trout fishing and canoeing are the popular pursuits here. Book early if you need a reserved site, since only some campsites take online bookings.
