What it is like
Whittier Waterfront is the shoreline of a quirky one-tunnel town, with waterfalls streaking the cliffs above the water. Glacier cruises launch into the Sound from here, so the waterfront is where the boats head out. The season runs May to September, and the cliffs and water make a dramatic setting.
The waterfront is in Whittier, and Horsetail Falls Trail, 0.2 miles away, climbs boardwalks and switchbacks to a platform facing a waterfall. Portage Pass, 1.6 miles away, is a short steep climb over the pass to a glacier-and-lake view. Whittier Harbor boat launch is Anchorage's nearest saltwater ramp, gated by a one-lane tunnel into Prince William Sound.
