Discovery Campground (Captain Cook SRA)
Nikiski
The feel
Discovery Campground sits on a bluff at the road's end north of Nikiski, with its sites looking out over Cook Inlet. Forests, quiet lakes, streams and saltwater beaches surround it, and the beaches are popular with agate hunters. Most Kenai Peninsula visitors never get this far, so the area is virtually undiscovered.
The sites are wooded and private. Moose, bear, coyote, wolves, beluga whales, harbor seals, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans and loons all live in the area. Anglers try the Swanson River for rainbow trout and silver salmon, and Stormy Lake for rainbows and arctic char. There are picnic sites, 2 picnic shelters and a boat launch, plus tent areas that you reach on foot or by boat.

Mingo says
Walk the beaches with the tide schedule in hand. Tides can come in too quickly to safely escape from the mud flats. Pick a wooded site for privacy, then settle in for the inlet view.
